DCA to Downtown DC by Metro: Fares, Time & Step-by-Step
Reagan National Airport (DCA) is the most convenient airport for Metro access — the station is inside the airport terminal complex and directly connected via pedestrian bridge from Terminal B/C.
Metro Center: about 18 minutes travel time. Peak fare: $2.90. Off-peak fare: $2.25. First train: ~5:15 AM. Last train: depending on the day of the week (midnight weekdays, 2 AM Fri/Sat).
In November 2022, the Silver Line was extended to Dulles International Airport, becoming the latest and longest Metro in the Washington region. The station of the Washington Dulles International Airport is situated at the level of the Arrivals.
Note: The Washington Dulles station is in Zone 6 — the highest fare zone. Budget approximately $4-5 per trip. Travel time varies by destination, but expect 45-65 minutes to downtown DC.
Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) is not directly on the Metro system, but is easily accessible via the MARC Penn Line commuter rail to Washington Union Station, which is on the Metro Red Line.
Total travel time: 60-80 minutes. Total cost: MARC fare ($9-$10) + Metro fare (~$2.25). Note: WMATA SmarTrip is not accepted on MARC — purchase a separate ticket at the MARC ticket machine. On weekends, the MARC B30 express bus from BWI to Greenbelt Metro station ($7) is another option.
| Route | Mode | Travel Time | Fare (off-peak) | First Service | Last Service |
| DCA to Metro Center | Metro Blue/Yellow | ~18 min | ~$2.25 | 5:15 AM | ~Midnight (weekdays) |
| IAD to Metro Center | Metro Silver Line | ~55 min | ~$4.00 | 5:30 AM | ~11:30 PM (weekdays) |

The DC Metro can be managed with luggage, but a little planning makes it much smoother:
• Use the elevator: All Metro stations have elevators — check status at wmata.com before travel to ensure your station's elevator is working
• Board near the ends of the train: The first and last cars are typically less crowded at airport stations
• Avoid rush hour with bags: Trains from 7:30-9:30 AM and 4:30-7 PM are extremely crowded — if you can time your airport trip outside these windows, do so
• Overhead racks: Metrorail cars have overhead luggage racks at both ends of each car
• Large bags policy: WMATA allows standard suitcases. Items that block aisles or doors are not permitted
• SmarTrip tip: Make sure your card has a sufficient balance before entering the airport station — fare machines in airports can have queues
| Airport Station | Mon-Thu Last Train | Fri Last Train | Sat Last Train | Sun Last Train |
| DCA (Reagan National) | ~11:45 PM | ~1:45 AM | ~1:45 AM | ~11:45 PM |
| Dulles (Silver Line) | ~11:15 PM | ~1:15 AM | ~1:15 AM | ~11:15 PM |
Warning: If you have a late-night arrival, Metro may not be running. For flights arriving after 11 PM on weeknights, plan for a rideshare or taxi, especially from Dulles.
