DC Metro Yellow & Orange Line - If there's one question that trips up new DC Metro riders more than any other, it's probably this: "What's the difference between the Yellow and the Orange line?" The two share a significant portion of the downtown DC track and even several suburban stations, which makes the confusion completely understandable. Here's everything you need to know about both lines — where they go, where they part ways, and when to choose one over the other.

Heads-up on short-turn trains: Some Yellow Line trains terminate at Mt. Vernon Square rather than continuing to Greenbelt. Before boarding, check the destination sign on the front of the train. A train showing "Greenbelt" will continue through Shaw, Columbia Heights, Petworth, and all the way north.
From any downtown Yellow Line station, board a southbound train toward Huntington. Get off at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport — the station is inside Terminal B/C, with a pedestrian connection to Terminal A.
Travel times: L'Enfant Plaza to the airport is roughly 6 minutes. From Gallery Place, around 10 minutes. From Metro Center (transfer to Yellow at L'Enfant Plaza), about 12 minutes total.
Fares run approximately $2.25–$3.00 from downtown DC during weekday daytime hours, dropping to a flat $2.25–$2.50 in the evenings and on weekends.
