DC Metro Center Station is the central hub of the Washington DC Metro system, which is served by four lines: Red, Blue, Orange, and Silver. This is at the intersection of 12th Street and G Street NW, downtown Washington DC, and the second-busiest station of the entire Metrorail network (with an average of more than 14,000 daily riders as of late 2026). Metro Center consists of four exits on the street and two levels of the platforms.
Metro Center is not merely a transit station, but the geographical and operational center of the Washington Metro. All riders of the system can access Metro Center by not more than one transfer out of any other station. Metro Center follows the system-wide schedule. It is the busiest station during weekday peak hours, with trains arriving every 2–4 minutes across all four lines combined on the lower platform.

The National Portrait Gallery is a free museum of the Smithsonian that hosts the portraits of t,,merican presidents, historical figures, and artists. It is located in the old Patent Office Building which is a beautiful neoclassical building. Open 11:30 AM to 7:00 PM (check smithsonianmag.com to find out the hours). The inner courtyard of the museum, the Kogod Courtyard,d is one of the most striking public spaces in DC.
The Washington Capitals (NHL), Washington Wizards (NBA), and big concerts are all located in Washington. Get out at 13 th and G St NW and walk one block northeast. During game and concert nights, trains are so overcrowded that 20-40 minutes after events are over, they are full. Housey. Gallery Place-Chinatown station is also near but might be less crowded after the event.
Stroll south on Triangle12th Street to Pennsylvania Avenue, and then west to the White House. The outside and grounds can be observed via the public fence; internal tours must be booked in advance via a Member of Congress.
The Department of Justice, Newseum site, and FBI Building are within walking distance of each other along the stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue between Metro Center and Capitol Hill.
